I remember Officer Friendly and McGruff from grade school. That, to the best of my recollection, was the extent of my grade school experience with law enforcement. I was taught that police existed primarily to protect and serve the community and catch the bad guys.

I ran across a quote the other day that made me suspect George W. Bush has done more reading than I was giving him credit for:

“Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”—Hermann Goering

That last part is certainly worth keeping in mind in the next few months as McCain gets more and more desperate to discredit Obama’s position on the war in Iraq.

Is barring Roland Burris a seat in the Senate racism?
Yes. Anyone notice he's the lone black guy set to replace the other lone black guy?

Nope. Blago's still under scrutiny and his appointments-white and black-are too "hot" right now.

Now that I can pronounce "Blagojevich" we need to find something else to talk about.
