American Values Alliance | Practical voice for progressive valuesI don’t know whether any of you made it to the vigil on Monument Circle last night. I’d guess maybe 60 or 70 people showed up, and figure that’s not bad for a weeknight in 90-degree heat. People of just about all ages were there, but most of the crowd looked to be middle-aged or older. What they had in common, of course, was a passionate dislike of George Bush and a fervent wish to see the war in Iraq brought to an end.
I suppose all such events draw hecklers and this one was no exception. The hecklers were all young and mostly male. I wasn’t sure what to make of that, except I kept thinking that if this war had a draft, they might have been in Iraq last night instead of riding around Monument Circle on their “Ninja” motorcycles, shouting obscenities and revving their engines at a bunch of gray-headed war protestors. You know the kind of motorcycles I’m talking about—they sound like giant insects.
Anyway, if I have a right to protest, they have a right to heckle. I certainly wouldn’t rather see them in Iraq.
A calendar of American troops killed or maimed since January 1 of this year was read. It took an hour.
