American Values Alliance | Practical voice for progressive valuesJohn McCain's nomination as GOP candidate is locked in as Mitt Romney drops out of the presidential campaign.
Mike Huckabee is going to have to really pray hard if he's going to stay in.
Conservative politico Laura Ingram opened with "A political party can't be all things to all people" slamming John McCain's more tempered approach to garning the moderate Republicans, the moderate to conservative Dems and Independents--clearly some type of heresy. Through the rest of her 5 minute introduction, she spent her time tearing down nominee-apparent, John McCain. Not an auspicious opening.
Now, let me give a listen to what Mitt Romney said...
He spoke about how a French official noted that the US was unique in that it alone, in the last century, did not take land from those it beat in warfare. No mention of the fact that the entirety of the United States was the result of a 200 year long, bloody land grab.
He spoke about pornography and broken families lead to more poverty and lawlessness and how children don't fare as well without their fathers and mothers in the home. He spoke about how the family is being attacked by liberal judges who are eroding the sanctity of marriage by considering spousal benefits for same sex couple. Not a mumbling word about how good straight people, who are getting divorced before they've paid off their weddings, are doing everything possible to discredit marriage for everybody.
He spoke about how Europe is facing what he calls a cultural crisis because of the culture of disrespect for the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of life, the celebration of pornography and immorality and hoped, aloud, that we not become another France (sure to make us even more amis over there).
He spoke about how China and Asia are rising up from centuries of poverty and that they are emerging as an econonic superpower. How Venezuela, Iran, Russia and other countries are siphoning off money directly from our economy because of our dependence on foreign oil. He called for us to stop being held hostage by Putin, Chavez and Ahmadinejad, by developing our our power sources for our homes, cars and businesses.
He spoke about government spending and not just about pork. Entitlements, now at 60% of the budget and by the end of the next presidential term 70% of government spending, must be curbed not only because spending cannot be maintained but because of the negative impacts entitlement programs have on the minds of the poor, who do less to get more.
He spoke about the connection between money and well-being of the people. He spoke about lowering taxes for people and corporations and standing up to the voraciousness of the unions to galvanize the economy's health.
He spoke about radical, violent jihad--that these jihadists believe that democracy is blasphemy and all governments must be replaced by caliphates. He believes that we cannot withdraw from the Middle Eastern theatre. To do so, will only encourage attacks here.
Then be beat up on the liberals, who he believes will add more entitlements and weaken families with their libertinism. He's clear that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would declare defeat in Iraq and Afganistan that would embolden the Taliban to attack us here. He said that by staying in the race, his continued campaign would forestall the launch of a national campaign and, because he believes in John McCain's stance on the war (and little else), he feels he must "stand aside for our party and our country."
He spoke with passion and conviction. If he'd spoken this way, it might have been John McCain giving the consession chat.
Certainly, the fact that he was spending his way through his children's inheritance and still would have to win 4 of every 5 delegates through the remainder of the campaign to even hope to get the nod had something to do with it. Another thing, little voiced, is the simple fact that John McCain, who swings more to the moderate end of the pendulum and is more willing to collaborate with Dems and Independents, represents the new Republican base.
I'll add the video when they put it up.
