Super Duper Delegates. Good Idea?

Lalita Amos | 02/12/2008 - 09:45
I love the idea of a 700 member cabal of shadowy people deciding who the nominee will be.

I hate this. What will happen to my vote?

I don't care. It's rigged anyway.

This is a shameless plug (but, at least I have absolutely no financial interest in this site), but the Demotivators® line of posters (as in opposition to the Successories® line of motivational posters) has one that is called "Tradition".

"Just because you've always done it that way, doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid".

Says a lot about one of the pillars of traditional conservatism (at least to me).

For cynical people (like me) who might want some chuckles on a rainy afternoon, go and check them out sometime.

I remember the public speaker's tale of the woman who made delicious hams after church on Sundays. Every week, she'd cut off the ends of her hams before baking them and produced amazing porcine results.

Years on, as the gathered generations of ham bakers asked their aged great-granny why she cut off the ends of the ham, she answered: "My pan was too small."

Superdelegates seem like the cut off ends of the ham: We're doing it because we always did it. Seems to me that we're in dire need of some real election reform--and not just about special interest money.

This falls under my personal theory of "historical persistence", where behavior and attitudes just don't go away very easily or very quickly. They just change forms and appearances.

Insider pols just stopped meeting in cloakrooms and smoking cigars. Now, they still make the same old backroom deals while sampling caviar or smoked salmon and sipping designer-bottled waters.
