And While We're Not Watching Rice is Being Rationed at Sam's, Costco

Lalita Amos | 04/23/2008 - 20:31

Heard this earlier today.

All Things Considered, April 23, 2008 · Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Sam's Club and Costco divisions are placing limits on the amount of rice that customers can buy. Company officials say demand for rice has shot up sharply in the wake of concerns about global food shortages. Listen Now

They're limiting purchases of rice while we're touting the virtues of biodiesels (to which the dramatic rise in the price of rice, corn and other grain staples is attributed...hence, our governor pinning his--and our--hopes on this costly, short-sighted fuel source).

Now that the wholesale outlets for Walmart have been impacted, how long will it be until we start seeing bare shelves in the rice aisle?

Global fucking food shortages.

Ray Miller | 04/28/2008 - 11:14 |  Global Warming - Yea we're making a difference.......not

I know I may be considered a Luddite for being one of the two or three people on the planet who has not drank the Koolaid and do not believe mankind's CO2 emissions are baking the planet.

I do believe the earth appears to be on a warming trend. But all the geological data seems to promote the concept that the earth has gone through a number of warm ups and ice ages and we happen to be spending our finite lives during one of those darn warm ups.....

Without any kind of true holistic approaches to addressing what are true energy concerns (regardless of global warming we are looking at possible peak oil production in the next decade we need to vastly expand our power production if we are to use less gasoline and use plug in hybrids or total electric cars and it would be good to become energy independent) our government has been passing out the ethanol koolaid.

Could not one have seen the obvious fallout of such an ill conceived approach.

Let's see aside from global population increases, and economic booms in India and China there is the simple fact that you can hardly pick up food in the store that does not have some corn sourced ingredients.

Dairy, beef, corn syrup, corn oil, corn solids, corn corn corn........

And now people think this is agood thing to burn in our gas tanks?

Not too mention the 30% less fuel mileage and the serious deterioration of automotive engines from buring ethanol..

People need to chill and really look at a comprehensive approach. At least R. Buckminster Fuller's book, The Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth. A genious without much of an audience.
