American Values Alliance | Practical voice for progressive valuesOn June 28th, 66 members from AFSCME, CWA, IATSE, IBB, IBEW, ISTA, NALC, OPEIU, SMW, UA, UAW, Unity Team, USW, gathered in Indianapolis and Shererville Indiana in order to educate their fellow union members on John McCain's anti-worker record.""The focus of the event was the Employee Free Choice Act, important legislation that John McCain voted against in the Senate. Accompanying the walkers, were Indiana State House Candidates John Barnes District 89, and Myron Sutton, District 15. Together, working families visited 537 homes in one afternoon!
Northwest Federation of Labor President Jerome Davison said that "the walks were extremely effective. It was a sunny day, and everyone we visited was really receptive and welcoming!" Labor 2008 Coordinator Robin Forsythe, who helped coordinate the event, was excited that they day was succesful,
"We all had a good experience on a beautiful day in Northwest IN. I always enjoy going door to door especially when it is to union members homes. The folks I talked to are engaged and are willing to do the work necessary to make a informed decision in the fall. My goal is to make sure our members have all the information they need to make this important decision, and I think we accomplished that today."
In Indianapolis, Nancy Holle (OPEIU Local 1) explained why the Employee Free Choice Act is such an important piece of legislation,
"OPEIU was organizing a credit union in Muncy, Indiana. And it has taken over three and a half years from the point the workers decided they wanted to join a union because of the way they were treated, to the time they got a first contract. And thats because the laws are so scewed in favor of employers and because those organizations that are set up to protect like the NLRB have just been gutted by this administration! So it's high time that employees get a voice! And the Employee Free Choice Act would provide that."
