The "New Yorker" Offers Snark, Falls Flat

Lalita Amos | 07/16/2008 - 12:52

Let's start out with Jon Stewart's insightful take on this situation...

Barack Obama is in no way upset about the cartoon depicting him as a muslim extremist.  'Cause you know who gets upset about cartoons? Muslims extremists, of which Barack Obama is not. It's just a fucking cartoon.

From Wiktionary, in case we've forgotten...

fuss, noun (plural fusses): (countable or uncountable) excessive activity, worry, bother, or talk about something; complaint or noise ; an exhibition of affection or admiration.

Yup. That's about it.

The cartoon cover was snark, plain and simple. Snark that few understood (as can be seen in the Stewart piece), but snark nonetheless.

What I like from Jon, Stephen and Keith in particular (as well as Kathy G. on the Hollywood set) is their skill in laying bare the penultimate ludicriousness of the political scene.

Poll
Will the Choice of Biden and not Bayh Make it Harder for Obama to Win Indiana?
Yes. Evan Bayh would have energized Indiana Democrats and "tipped" the state.
0%
Maybe. But choosing Bayh would have made it much, much harder to win the election.
60%
No. Indiana voters know Bayh, and choosing him would have reflected poorly on Obama's judgment.
40%
Hard to say.
