Back to the Drawing Board for Disney’s First Black Princess

WOW... I just caught this as I was getting ready to get off here and go to bed. I'll have to post more later about it, but I thought it was certainly worth sharing before I nod off...

Back to the Drawing Board for Disney’s First Black Princess

(Oh and how much do you want to bet the villain isn't going to be Caucasian?)

MelissaT | 07/20/2008 - 14:46 |  Zipitty do dah, zipitty day, my oh my what a perfect Aryan day!!

Nothing but white folks comin my way

zipitty do dah, zipitty yeh!!

You've got to be shitting me that the "brilliant" minds at Disney can't come up with a storyline "suitable" for a black heroine (and god forbid her prince charming be a proud, ambitious, intelligent black man.) Here's a wild idea- I'm sure they have other projects in the works- why not just have the main characters in their next big blockbuster black? My hunch?

Money

(I know, I know... I can hear the gasps of surprise from all of you as I write this.)

They fear losing their white audience and the dollars behind them if they don't have one (or both) of the main characters caucasian.

I find it a sad and pathetic commentary on American (pop) culture when it's more acceptable to produce films with Middle Eastern, Native American and Asian ("Aladdin", "Pocohontas", "Mulan") heros and heroines (hell- even "alien/Monster" looking ones like "Shrek") than it is a film with Black Characters. (and I would be willing to bet good money that if Aladdin hadn't have been released pre-9/11 it would have never been.)

Racialicious has a thought provoking page on The 9 Most Racist Disney Characters.

Some other character combinations we won't be seeing any time soon from good ol' racist, anti-Semitic* Walt's studio:

Any heroine that isn't "36-24-36" (LOL- or any hero with a receeding hairline)

A white heronie with a black hero (bonus points if/when it happens if A.) she's a fair skinned blonde and he's the most deliciously dark chocolate man ever committed to film and B.) the couple produces a child at the end of the movie.)

A Mexican Hero/Heroine (where they don't live in a house with 20 other people and have to scale a ginormous wall while being shot at by BushCo. minions at any point in the storyline.)

A bisexual, gay, lesbian or transgender couple anywhere in a storyline- I imagine that it will appear first as a quick snippit just as a "test run" to see if it causes a huge outrage, then as supporting characters before they will be promoted to main characters. (I'd like to see Pixar release "Adam & Steve"- just think! They could make Adam and Steve action figures, Adam & Steve plush toys, underroos, bedroom linen....)

* See paragraph 6 (and if you really want to start your week with a good dose of asshattery read the review posted May 2nd.) Sad...

Can't wait to see what you have to add to this post thread. I'm heading for the Pepto B and might just hit myself in the head with the bottle until the pain stops and my world goes blissfully dark.
